What You Never Want to Hear Your Kid Say

Carter is our little craft genious. He can literally make ANYTHING out of paper (legos too). He spends at least an hour a day with paper, scissors, tape, and whatever else he can find around the house.

Last night, Carter came out of his room and said "I'm just so frustrated. I can't get the voices in my head to stop screaming." Of course we were concerned about what types of "voices" he could be hearing. We started asking (rather hopefully), "Are they happy voices? Like kids laughing?". "No," he said, "They are mean voices and they start out quiet and they just get louder and louder till they are screaming at me."

Can I say "YIKES"? This sounded really bad (although- he didn't appear to be as terrified as we would expect him to be if voices were really yelling in his head.) We started suggesting things like singing a hymn or reading a book to get it out of his head, with no agreement from Carter. He finally asked "Do you know what a dream-catcher is? I want to make one now because it will make the voices go away. Do you know how to make one, Dad?" Apparently, he had heard or read about dream catchers and decided 9:30 at night was a great time to pull out the craft supplies and make one. What better excuse to NEED a dream catcher than to be "hearing voices."

If it wasn't for the fact that we knew his ulterior motive, he would be going to a psychiatrist this next week. We are happy to say that Carter's voices went away as quickly as he realized that a craft after 9:30 was not a possibility. PHEW!

Anyway, Carter's crafts/comics/books/etc. are amazing. We've put images of a few of them below for you to check out.

Flip Book (characters can change powers by changing the feet and heads)

Activity Book

Book about being Thankful

Sorry about the lame image quality. It was a real pain to get these pages scanned! Carter made a backpack (out of paper) for Mallory this week, and if there were a way to scan that in, we would.

Suzy,

Carter has your creativity. In fact, the activity book is SO YOU!!! I can't believe you passed that on to your son! Well, his wife will be happy as he is sewing crafts and painting activities for his kids. I am amazed. Maybe a dream catcher will help the voices that keep screaming in my head....
