Maybe that isn't amazing to anyone but us. Here's what we couldn't believe:
1- They had 5 flashlights. We once had 5 flashlights, maybe 6 or 7. Unfortunately, our flashlights had kid-magnets in them. We're not sure where you can buy the flashlights that don't have the magnets. (Our two biggest flashlights bit the dust when Mallory filled them with water and put them back in the drawer. See picture.)
2- All 5 flashlights had live batteries. We don't even have 10 working batteries in our house! As I write this, for example, our TV remote's batteries are dead, so we have to stand up and push buttons on our actual TV (that is, when the power is working) . ANNOYING!!
3- They actually had candlesticks for the candles. Candlesticks? What year is this? 1412?
Things got kind of awkward (hanging out with no power at our friends' house) so we headed home with dread in our hearts, knowing things weren't going to be so smooth. It took us about 25 minutes to gather up what we could (3 flashlights, scented candle stubs, and camping lanterns). We even found some crystal candlesticks that we received as a wedding gift.
The point of our story is that we were totally unprepared for even the tiniest of inconveniences, let alone a major disaster. Perhaps we should make some changes.

It's great to get a chance to realize a simple way what you need to be prepared. We are like you as far as flashlights go. I do have one hidden under my bed that the kids haven't discovered yet. We got our kids their own flashlights and this has seemed to do the trick as they don't take the ones out of the closet anymore. We just now need to get rechargeable batteries as they often are left on.
We were out of power for 6 DAYS from Hurricane Ike. Let me tell you, candles were all that was available when the stores were absoultely devoid of batteries. We now have a HUGE stock pile of batteries of every size. :)
Power outages are a common occurrence in our neighborhood. We once got locked out of our house because we couldn't open the garage door when we came home. Not fun. It's a good thing we know how to break into our own house. We keep candles on the fireplace mantle so we know exactly where they are.
The most frustrating is that we look to our West and Camp Williams is all aglow, then we look to our East and Cabella's is all aglow. How'd we get stuck in the middle? What's wrong with this picture? We're ready to install on of those giant windmills in our backyard, but I don't think the HOA would be pleased with that one.
I know what you mean. I was doing the same thing, fumbling around looking for lights and candles. Really made me realize that we need to work on our preparedness too.
Awesome story! I love it! We had a major power outage up here too and I could only find one flashlight with almost dead batteries. Bummer! The power was out for like 8 hours. I taped the fridge closed so no one would accidentally open it. We're so lame!
